George Thomas

Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

George R. Thomas, O-422142 Captain, Glendale, Calif. For extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the European and North African Theaters of Operations as pilot of a B-17 type aircraft. While on a mission to Kasserine Pass on 23 February 1943, Captain Thomas’ bomber was hit many times by extremely accurate anti-aircraft fire. Even though his number four engine caught fire, his hydraulic system was shot out, and his wing flaps were damaged, he continued to lead his formation. A heavy overcast was encountered over the target and Captain Thomas further displayed exceptional skill as he maintained formation during a twenty-five minute search for an opening in the clouds. Upon sighting the target, he led his formation directly over the area in a successful bomb run and returned to his home base. His courage and devotion to duty have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States. GO #122, HQ Northwest African Air Forces, 22 June 1943.

Capt George R Thomas Jr was assigned to the 301st BG 419th Squadron. Military Occupational Specialty (MOS): Pilot.
