Walter Zumpe


Walter T. Zumpe, Jr., Age 85, A 50 Year Resident Of New Orleans, La And Former Resident Of Daleville, IN, passed away unexpectedly August 29, 2005, During Hurricane Katrina. He Was Born In Daleville, IN on October 15, 1919. The son Of Walter And Helen Grace Stewart Zumpe. He Was a graduate of Daleville High School And In 1941 Ball State Teachers College (Ball State University). He Retired As Plant Manager For C & S Division Of Standard Brands, Inc. New York, Chicago, And New Orleans After 21 Years. He Served 19 Years As Vice President Of Production With Wm. B. Reily And Company, Inc. He was a member of The Lakeside Veterans Group And American Legion Post No. 282. He was a U.S. Army Flying Cadet, Class Of 1941. He served In the U.S. Army Air Force From 1941 - 1945 with The 52nd Fighter Group, 4th Squadron and the 301st Bomber Group, 419th Squadron. He served 3 years and 2 weeks in the European Theater of WWII and was A POW-MIA In Hungary and Germany from 1944-1945. He was Awarded 11 Battle Stars, Air Medal with 4 Silver Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Prisoner of War Medal and Citation Of Valor by General Twining, Commander Of The 15th Air Force.

He is survived by his devoted Wife, June Hartway Zumpe Of New Orleans; daughters, Leslie Sharon And Lisa Mary; son-In-law Larry Gillmar; Granddaughters, Aime'e Hayes, Sacha Peiser And Julie Faust; 7 Great Grandchildren And brother-in-law Ben McKay. Besides His Parents, Mr. Zumpe was preceded in death by his son Mark Stewart Zumpe, his sisters Jean Zumpe White and Janet Zumpe McKay and his two brothers Keith And Jack Zumpe.

Funeral Services were held with Military Honors on Veterans Day, November 11, 2005, at Saunders Cemetery, Daleville, IN, At the Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 8212 South Walnut Street, Daleville, with Pastor Roberta Hart From Union, Ohio. Memorials can be made to the National D-Day Museum, 524 Andrew Higgins Blvd., New Orleans, La 70130 or to Disabled American Veterans, 701 Loyola Avenue, New Orleans, La 70113.
