Born 7 February 1919 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri (MO).
Attended grade school, high school, graduating at 16 and attended 2 years at Missouri State Teacher's College, now Southeast Missouri State University.
Worked at Acme Woodcraving Co., in Memphis, Tn, for his uncle, Courtney T. Chron for several years, then moved to California for several years.
Knowing he would be drafted, he joined the U. S. Army Air Corps.
Stationed at Montgomery, Alabama. Passed test to attend OCS at Kelly AFB, San Antonio, Texas (TX). Received his Lt. and became a Navigator, stationed at Alamogordo AFB, New Mexico(NM); Biggs Air Force Base, EI Paso, TX; Salina, Ks; Topeka, Ks.; then to Florida with their new B-17F headed for overseas in December 1942.
Stationed with 12 AF, 301st Bomb Grp., 352nd Bomb Sq., he completed over 50 missions before heading state side. Traveled on board Navy ship coming home and arriving in New York, NY in September 1943.
30 days leave in Cape Girardeau, MO at which time he and Jane Collins from EI Paso, TX were married on 29 Sep 1943.
Stationed at Dyersburg AFB, TN, training other crews, then Clovis AFB, NM, training others in B-29's. Discharged in September 1945.
The couple have 4 children, Eugene Russel Ulrich II; (Ret. Navy 30 yrs); Carolyn (Kandy) Jane Ulrich (Pignataro); Elwood Randolph Ulrich; and Constance (Connie) Lanier Ulrich Roybal; 8 grandsons; and 6 great granchildren, 1 boy and 5 girls.
Traveled extensively after 1968 throughtout U. S. and Canada in an Airstream travel trailer. He has been President of Paso del Norte Airstream Club and President of Good Sam Club in EI Paso. Worked as foreman for R. E. McKee EI Paso, TX and became a custom home builder, later going to work for Govemment at White Sands Missle Range, NM, being involved in building Lem Excursion Module Test Facility (LEM); William Beaumont General Hospial, EI Paso, TX and many other military facilities, retiring in 1976.
Gene is now almost 92 yrs in 2010. He's Still up and around and fairly active. He's been married 67 years this year.
