Francis Tinsler
TINSLER, Francis R. 87, of St. Petersburg died on July 7, 2008 in Charlottesville, VA. He was born on Jan. 17, 1921 in Boston, MA, and was the son of Walter and Lillian (Newman) Tinsler. He earned a Master's Degree from Northeastern University in Civil Engineering. During WWII, Fran earned the rank of Captain in the 301st Bombardment Group based in Fogia, Italy, flying B-17's. He flew 35 sorties and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart. He went on to serve in the Korean War, flying the B-29 bomber. After moving to Florida, Fran worked for the City of St. Petersburg for over 10 years. Mr. Tinsler is survived by his wife, Anne Tinsler; his son, Richard Tinsler; his daughter, Kathryn Morris of St. Petersburg; and two grandchildren, Jonathan and Sarah Morris. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross in St. Petersburg. Mr. Tinsler will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on October 6th, following a chapel service with full military honors.
