Phillip Smith
Philip C. Smith, age 90 of Catskill, died Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Columbia Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
Born October 1, 1920 in Hempstead, NY, he was the son of the late Percy and Gertrude Dwyer Smith. He graduated from Hempstead High School and was employed by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. in Bethpage prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He was honorably discharged in 1945, having earned the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Purple Heart while serving with the 15th Air Force on combat duty with the 301st Bomb Group 419th Squadron.
He graduated from Hofstra University on Long Island with a Bachelors Degree in 1949 and married the former Louise Stone on September 28, 1952 in the Woodstock Methodist Church. He was an accountant with Aerobilt Bodies in Athens and retired from the NYS Teachers Assn. as a Data Processing Technician in 1983. Following retirement, he and his wife traveled throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Central America and Mexico.
He was a life member of the American Legion Honeyford Memorial Post 110, 15th AF 301st Bomber Group, former member of the Catskill Golf Club, NYS Retired Teachers Assn, and an active member of the United Methodist Church. His outgoing, friendly personality engaged everyone and he especially enjoyed keeping in touch with his crew members from WWII at their reunions, the challenge of golf, and Tuesday ritual of morning coffee at Bettys in Leeds with his dear friends, Jenks, Tony, Al and Joe.
Phil is survived by his wife of 59 years, Louise Smith of Catskill; sister Marilyn Albright of Copiague, NY as well as several nieces and nephews including Roy Brundage, Douglas Brundage, Weeda Wellenberger, and Sandra Hahl. He was predeceased by his brother Warren W. Smith and sister Gwendolyn Brundage.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 26 at 2 p.m. in the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill with Rev. Ronald B. Cox, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodstock Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to call from 12 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church at 40 Woodland Ave. or Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene at 47 Liberty St. Catskill, NY 12414.
