James Sennish

JAMES M. SENNISH, well-known Kelleys Islander, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011. He had been hospitalized since a fall on Dec. 10. Jim Sennish dearly loved Kelleys Island, where he spent every summer growing up, and where his family has resided for many generations.

Jim was born Dec. 19, 1922, in Cleveland. A graduate of Cathedral Latin school, he was a track runner and World War II veteran. As the tail gunner on a B17, he flew 32 missions over Axis-occupied Europe. The night his crew first arrived at their base in Foggia, Italy, they were told about the big raids on the Ploesti oil fields in Romania. So many men were killed, and so many planes shot down on the Ploesti raids, Jim said he missed taking part in those raids by luck - "just luck."

Graduating from Baldwin-Wallace College, he married Anne Cleary, and spent his working years in the graphic arts industry in Detroit. A 53 year resident of Farmington, MI, he was the father of John (wife Robbie) of Coldwater, MI, Mary (husband Kyle Paine) of Kelleys Island, Jane of Kelleys Island, Joseph of San Jose, CA, and Frank (wife Kim) of Bonita Springs, FL; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and loving nieces and nephews in the DeBoard family.
