Jesse Prim

Pvt. Jesse L. Prim Jr.

For extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight over Hungary. On 27 June 1944, in spite of formidable cloud formations which restricted visibility and forced the formation to be dispersed with the exception of three ships, the crew of this B-17 type aircraft continued on its mission, successfully maintaining its course although attacked by approximately thirty (30) enemy fighter planes. Sustaining critical damage which rendered one engine useless and further destroyed the oxygen system throughout the plane, the crew courageously manned their stations, exercising expert skill and without regard for extreme pain and suffering inflicted on them. With the plane greatly damaged, including loss of brakes, the return trip was accomplished in formation and a safe landing effected. It was not until the mission was complete that it was learned that the tail gunner, engineer and radio operator had been wounded, but, believing their comrades to be in greater need, had remained silent. The untiring efforts of the bombardier and the skill of the pilot and co-pilot in handling the disabled plane, plus the air discipline and individual ability of the entire crew demonstrated the highest form of devotion to duty. By their competence, unselfish heroism, deliberate, level-headed efficiency in the face of extreme danger, this crew has reflected the highest credit upon themselves and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
