George Powell
Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
George E. Powell, (ASN 36074585) Staff Sergeant, Medora, Ill. For extraordinary achievement while participating as tail gunner on a B-17F on high altitude daylight bombardment missions over enemy occupied territory in North Africa during the period from 4 January 1943 to 20 April 1943 in which he completed a large number of sorties and has been given credit for the destruction of one ME 109 F. During this period, Sergeant Powell, as tail gunner, stood his position with courage and coolness when subject to intense barrages of enemy anti-aircraft fire and repeated attacks of enemy fighter planes. By so doing, Sergeant Powell had an important part in the success of this squadron and has given ample support to the safety of his aircraft and fellow crewmen. He has displayed expert professional knowledge and sound judgment in carrying out his duties on combat missions. This display of courage, skill and determination reflects great credit on the Armed Forces of the United States. GO #90, HQ Northwest African Air Forces, 29 May 1943.
