Karl Osmer
T/SGT Karl Godfrey Osmer 352nd BS Karl Godfrey Osmer passed away with his family present at Memorial Healthcare on Sunday, March 7, 2010. Karl was born March 28, 1918, in his grandparents' home in New Haven Township, the son of Samuel Ernest and Edith Suzanne (Schautz) Osmer. He graduated from Flushing High School, working on the family farm until being called for duty.
He served in the 15th Air Force, 301st Bomb Group, 352nd Squadron of the United States Army Air Corps. He flew in a B-17 as a radio operator and was stationed in Foggia, Italy. Prior to returning home, he flew 52 missions, the last mission being part of the southern invasion of France.He was then employed with the United States Post Office for 32 years.
While stationed in Florida, he met his bride-to-be Helen (Stahl) and they were married upon his return from overseas in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Nov. 1, 1944. Following his discharge, they moved to Michigan where they raised their family.
Karl was a member of the Owosso Wesleyan Church, the American Legion and the Corunna VFW. He enjoyed camping, canoeing, vacationing with family and friends and more than 30 years of retirement in Florida.
Survivors include his wife Helen; daughters Sandra (Avery) Weaver and Joy (and the late John) Archer; and sons Keith (Diane Walker) Osmer and Robert (Anne Gregoricka) Osmer. The grandchildren are Craig (Susan) Weaver, Karla (Brent) Tuma, Jonathan (April) Archer, Jeremy (Brandy) Archer, Julie (Jason) Pappas, Sarah (Chris) Osmer-DiMattina, Carrie Osmer, Theresa Osmer, Kate Osmer, Bethany Osmer, Allison Osmer, Holly Osmer and great-grandchildren Ryan Weaver, Jordan Waters, Jaylen Waters, Ross Raatz, Gwen Archer, Josh Archer, Josephine Archer, Hannah Archer, Levi Archer and Liam John Pappas. He also is survived by his brother Roy (Kathy) Osmer; sister Margaret (Alvin) Mattson and sister-in-law Dorothy Temple. Also, many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by son-in-law John Archer, a brother Don Osmer, and a sister Eleanor (Ross) Hunt.
Funeral services will be held at Nelson-House Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, with Rev. Wes Coffey officiating. Interment will follow at West Haven Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, from noon to 8 p.m. with family present from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Owosso Wesleyan Church Building Fund.
