Victor Nikolaus
Victor C. Nikolaus, 90, of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. He was born in Columbia, on September 11, 1919, son of the late Fred A. and Tillie Shank Nikolaus. He was a retired Civil Service Equipment Specialist-Allowance Clerk at the Mechanicsburg Naval Depot for 27 years, before retiring in 1969.
He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII in England, North Africa and Italy with the 352nd Bomb Squadron 301st Bomb Group. He was awarded the European Theatre Campaign Ribbon: Air offensive Europe, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Northern France, Rhineland, North Appenines, Po Valley, Air Combat Balkans. Distinguished Unit Badge with one Oak Leaf cluster.
A member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church; the Holy Name Society; Knights of Columbus, Council 2294; Catholic War Veterans, Post 1306; life member of Red Rose Memorial VFW Post 2435; life member of American Legion Post 372; life member of the 301st Bomb Group Wing Association; fifty year member of Lancaster County AAA. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Athletic Club where he participated in the Columbia Bowling Leagues, played basketball and was on the ping pong team in the Lancaster County League.
He is survived by one sister: Dorothy N. Fry, Columbia. Numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Bernard F. Nikolaus, Harold W. Nikolaus and Robert P. Nikolaus. Four sisters: Lillian E. Nikolaus, Cecelia Nikolaus, Helen N. Smith and Mildred N. Crawford. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry Street, Columbia, PA 17512 on Friday, September 25, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Kenneth F. Lawrence as celebrant. Final commendation and farewell will be in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors being accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to: Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
