Mission Missing Air Crew Reports (MACR)
When an aircraft went down behind enemy lines; the Army Air Forces created a investigative and factual document. They called these Missing Air Crew Reports or MACRs. These files began during mission debrief and included basic facts about the plane and crew along with eyewitness statements. Some of these reports did not get completed until after the war was over and POWs returned. Some are very brief as some planes as in the case of bombers left formation and attempting to return to base simply just vanished, while others have elaborate documentation including german reports. We are not able to provide all the pages of some of these MACRs because their computer file size is too large to load or download via a web brower. They are presented in the PDF format. There were accidents on takeoff as well as landing; additionally when planes went down over Allied lines, they were not 'Missing'; so a MACR was not created.
