GENERAL ORDER #3272 - 18 May 1945

Award of the Silver Star, Posthumous

FINLEY J. DUTTON, O-2001366, Second Lieutenant, 353rd Bomb Sq 301st Bomb Gp. For Gallantry in action as navigator of a B-17 type aircraft. On 4 March 1945, Lt. Dutton participated in a bombing mission against vital enemy communications in Yugoslavia. Over the target intense ans accurate anti-aircraft fire severely damaged Lt. Dutton’s aircraft and seriously wounded him. His aircraft was forced to drop from the protective formation and it was decided to make an emergency landing. In spite of his serious wounds, Lt. Dutton remained at his post until the aircraft was finally ditched in extremely rough seas. He immediately climbed out onto the wing with an enlisted man in an attempt to extricate the life raft. Shortly after this Lt. Dutton was washed into the rough seas and subsequently drowned. By his conspicuous gallantry, courageous action and intense devotion to duty, as evidenced throughout his combat career, Lt. Dutton has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Residence at appointment: Red Oak, Iowa. Next of kin: Mr. Cecil O. Dutton (Father) , 221 – 7th Street, Red Oak, Iowa.
