Edward Denaci

Ed - April 1944 Foggia, Italy

"In March 1940, I applied for Flying Cadet training in the Army Air Corps and failed the eye test. Subsequently, I was inducted in the Infantry in February 1941. In September 1942, I became an Aviation Cadet and was qualified for Pilot, Navigator or Bombardier training. After over 38 hours of flight time, I washed out of pilot training and eventually started navigator training. November 13, 1943, I was rated a Navigator and commissioned a 2nd Lt. A week later, I was married and we spent our honeymoon in New Mexico and Virginia where I received my combat crew training in B24s. In March 1944, our crew picked up a new B24 at Mitchel Field, NY and flew it, by way of South America and Africa, to Italy and I flew 2 combat missions in B24s with experienced crews. The 301st BG, among others, was short of pilots and navigators. I was fortunate in being chosen to be transferred to the 419th BS, 301st BG. Further fortunate, because my former crew was shot down over Yugoslavia on the first mission that they flew as a crew. My remaining missions were completed in B 17s. I was promoted to 1st Lt. on July 2, 1944 and, on July 27th, I flew my last mission and was credited with 50 combat missions. During a leave at home, our first son was born. I completed an Instructor's Indoctrination School training course and was assigned to a B17 Combat Crew Training Squadron as a navigation instructor. I remained in that position until separation from the Army Air Corps in October 1945".
