5/9/1943 Flak smashed his windshield, shrapnel fragements hit his chest. Dazed and temporarily blinded and with verbal direction from his crew he piloted his AC back to formation, completed the bomb run, then successfully avoided a large force of EA after the DFC 5/24/1943 AM/OLC 4/6/1943
