James Carnell
J.Carnell, Front Row, 2nd from right wearing officers visor. Overseas. Born 6 Oct. 1916 in Halls, Tn. Graduated with pharmacy degree from Univ. of Tennessee medical school at Memphis in 1939. Entered service early 1942 and began flight training at Maxwell Fld., Alabama for 2 ½ months. Was at Helena, Ark . for 2 ½ months for more flight training and then began bombardier training at Santa Ana, Cal and later at Roswell, N.M. and then at Casper Wyoming from 12 Dec 42 until May 44 where he was a bombardier instructor part of this time. Went to Galveston 12 May 44 for more bombardier training, and then served as an instructor and did more training on Norden at Alexandria, La. Served 7 ½ months (18 Nov. 44 to 30 Jun 45) overseas as a B17 bombardier with 301st bomb group, 353rd bomb squadron. Personnel file shows 21 combat missions during this time until the war ended. Returned to Tennessee and owned a neighborhood drug store in Memphis for many years. James passed away Feb. 2005 at age 87.
